A Clockwork Orange and Kidulthood

After watching the two films 'Kidulthood' and 'A Clockwork Orange', I have seen a strong representation of young people in each. The films have some similarities in the ways in which they portray young people but also show some differences.
A Clockwork Orange is a film made in 1971 about a group of young boys who call themselves 'droogs'. Kidulthood is a modern film made in 2006 which is about the lives of several teenagers. The first noticable similarity between the way young people are shown in the two movies is that young people show a lot of violence in both. From the start of Kidulthood we see the young girls hitting Katie and also see the teenage men showing violent behaviour towards each other. Also in A Clockwork Orange at the very beginning we see the four boys violently attacking an older man on the street, and in a lot of other scenes in the film they are seen using violence. These scenes make the audience feel that young people are violent in nature. However, in A Clockwork Orange we see the four teenagers showing violence towards mostly older people, whearas in Kidulthood we only see young people being violent towards people of around the same age. In both films this could be seen as the younger people trying to gain control. In one case (A Clockwork Orange) we see young people trying to get control of adults and in the other (Kidulthood) they are trying to be in control of the people of their own age group.
In both films we hear the younger people speaking in a somewhat unpleasant way. They swear and curse in both films however the language used is also different. The difference in language may be due to the time periods of which the films were made. In Kidulthood we hear them speaking in a common and aggressive way which makes the audience feel they are of a low class. However although in A Clockwork Orange they use aggressive language they do not sound common, infact they sound somewhat of a higher class. In both films the language used towards those who are being hurt is abusive which shows the power over other people.
In a Clockwork Orange the gang of 'droogs' who are seen as the villains are all male. However in Kidulthood we see both male and female young people being abusive and violent. One example of this is when a young girl is verbally and physically abusing another young girl in the classroom. In Kidulthood it shows young women and men as having power over each other however this differs in A Clockwork Orange as we only see young boys being the abusive and dominant characters. Both films show young people to be sexually promiscuous but in different ways. In Kidulthood we see relationships and hear many sexual references which tells the audience the young people are being sexually promiscuous. However in A Clockwork Orange we see more sexual abuse. Near the start of the film we see two seperate rape scenes which show young men abusing women. This differs to Kidulthood as although we see they are being promiscuous it is not shown in such a harmful way.

Young people can be seen as criminals in both films. In Kidulthood we see many ways in which the law is broken, such as drugs, guns and assault. At the end of Kidulthood we see arrests of young people and this represents young people as criminals. Similar to Kidulthood, in A Clockwork Orange the four teenagers are seen to rape, steal and assault people. The leader of the droogs is seen to be arrested in this movie also which shows clearly to the audience that he is a criminal.

  1. An excellent analysis Laura. Well done. You have hilighted all the different ways in which the films are comparable representations of young people. The use of media language is very clear too. I particularly like the gender analysis - very pertinent.
    Well done
