This week we began thinking about what we are going to do for our coursework. We know that we are going to have to produce a movie trailer, poster and magazine cover. Firstly we have been thinking about genre. Our first thoughts in the group were that we would like to do either a Thriller or an Action. However we decided that an action movie may be difficult to produce after looking at other Action film trailers. We saw that the trailers for action films included a lot of explosions and that this would be very challenging for us to create. Therefore we have decided that a Thriller would be a better option. After deciding that a Thriller was the genre we wanted to use I have started looking as Thriller movie posters so that I can see what they generally include. These are some Thriller film posters which I find are particularly effective and fit in with their genre very well.
I think that this movie poster for the film 'Shutter Island' is quite eye-catching and you can tell that it is a thriller by looking at this poster. The use of colours in this poster help to give the idea that it is a thriller. The colours are all quite dark and include reds which gives the poster an intense feeling. Also the facial expression on his face is very serious and almost spooky looking. This is something that also gives a sense of intensity to the poster and therefore draws people in.
This is an older poster for the film 'Silence of the Lambs' which is another movie that fits into the Thriller genre. Although this is an older poster I feel it is still quite effective. The colours used in this poster are similar to those in the Shutter Island poster above. The colours are still quite dark and dull which seems to be something typical of Thriller movie posters. In this poster the main focus appears to be the close-up photo of the face. The eyes are in colour and the rest of the photo is in black and white which helps to make the eyes stand out more and creates an intense feeling. The fact that there is a bee over her mouth gives the people who see the poster a sense of confusion and makes them want to know more.
Here is a poster for the 2009 film 'The Box' which fits into the Thriller/Drama genre. In this poster there is a lot of black and white however the red through the middle gives the idea that something bad will happen and also is a typical colour associated with Thrillers. Similar to the posters above the facial expression of the person in this poster is not a happy one. The facial expression of the women in this poster is also serious and this gives off the idea that the film is not going to be a comedy or an up-beat film.
Some very helpful research evidenced here Laura. Well done. Use the media terms.
